Gone Fishing

I love Mo Manning's images - this one is called "Fishing". I have had it coloured for a while but only just made it into a card tonight for my husband's boss who loves fishing (although his boat is a tad bit bigger!) Here is my card:

Elizabeth Whisson, Mo Manning, digi stamp, Fishing, Copic, Copic sketch, boating, handmade card

I have printed Mo Manning's digital image "Fishing" onto X-Press It blending card and coloured with Copic markers. The DP is Studio Calico - Here and There and the base card (and backing for the picture) is Bazzill textured cardstock "Artic".

I've then added a few touches of glossy accents to the fishing rod, float and water in the bucket.

The Copic colouring took me a while but the card was whipped together in a few minutes.

PowerPoppy - Digi Gladioli

PowerPoppy stamps are awesome and in the month of May four digi stamp sets were released! I have had an awesome time colouring each and every one! Check out my other cards here: Tulips, Gerbera Daisies and Peonies.

The PowerPoppy blog has also started some challenges in May and one of them is a Get Sketchy (sketch) challenge. Here is my card:

This is the sketch:
http://powerpoppy.blogspot.com.au/2014/05/get-sketchy.html

I have printed the PowerPoppy Digi Gladioli image onto X-Press It blending card and coloured with Copic markers. This has then been mostly cut with the Sizzix oval framelit except for two parts of the Gladioli that I have fussy cut around. The sentiment is also printed onto X-Press It blending card and has been diecut using Spellbinders Nestabilities Labels Seventeen. I have used the same Spellbinders die set to cut the red DP (Basic Grey RSVP). The two green strips are from Bo Bunny Family Is collection and the blue/white background piece is from ODBD Christian Faith Paper Collection. The card base is Bazzill textured cardstock. All pieces have been inked around the edges using Distress Ink Chipped Sapphire. The buttons are Beutron craft buttons and the twine is AnnaBelle Stamps natural hemp twine.

I am also entering this card in the following challenges:

Copics used: B60, B63, B65, B69, YG21, YG25, G43, G46 and G29.

Thanks for looking :-)

PowerPoppy - Digi Gerbera Daisies

I am really enjoying the new digi images from PowerPoppy and love that they have challenges! Their very first challenge on the blog is Pop Goes the World colour challenge. Here is my card I made for this challenge:

Elizabeth Whisson, PowerPoppy, Gerbera Daisies, Copic, handmade card

This is the inspiration/colour image:

I have printed the PowerPoppy Digi Gerbera Daisies image onto X-Press It blending card and coloured with Copics. I've also added some glossy accents to the middle of the Gerbera Daisies. The sentiment is from the same set and also printed onto X-Press It blending card. I've used yellow, peach/orange and green Bazzill textured cardstock to make numerous layers on my card. The peach/orange piece has been embossed using Craft Concepts Christmas Vine embossing folder. Lastly I've added three little AnnaBelle Stamps 3 mm sprinkles (#15 lime) to the top right. The edges of each layer have been inked using Distress Ink Wild Honey, Mowed Lawn or Mustard Seed.

Copics used: Y11, Y19, Y38, YR04, BV25, E23, YG91, YG93, YG97, BV00 and the colourless blender.

You can see more cards that I have made using the other PowerPoppy Digi stamps here: Tulips, Peonies and Gladioli.

PowerPoppy - Digi Peonies

The PowerPoppy Blog has some challenges on at the moment! One of them is the Unabashedly Upbeat Challenge. You must use one of the new PowerPoppy digi stamps (which are all gorgeous!). Here is my card:

Elizabeth Whisson, PowerPoppy, peonies, handmade card, Copic, watercolour pencils

And this is the inspiration:
http://powerpoppy.blogspot.com.au/2014/05/be-unabashedly-upbeat.html

For my card I was inspired by the colours in the picture. I printed the PowerPoppy Digi Peonies image onto X-Press It blending card and coloured with Copics. The background is done with watercolour pencils using the "paint palette" technique that I explain in this post. The sentiment is from the same PowerPoppy Digi Peonies set and also printed onto X-Press It blending card. I have used Bazzill textured cardstock as backing for my image and sentiment and also for the card base. All edges have been inked using Distress Ink Peacock Feathers. Lastly I've added three pearls to the lower right corner.

Copics used: V20, V22, V25, V28, W5, YG61, YG63, YG67, W1 and W3.
Watercolour pencils used: Faber Castell Art Grip Aquarelle numbers 143, 153 and 141.

PowerPoppy - Digi Tulips

I am loving the new PowerPoppy website and while I love stamping with physical stamps it is fun to have digi's sometimes (and they arrive much faster)! Digi's or not, the new images from PowerPoppy are just gorgeous and I enjoyed colouring each and every one of them!
For my other cards please visit: Peonies, Gerbera Daisies and Gladioli.

This is my card that I made with the PowerPoppy Digi Tulip set.

Elizabeth Whisson, PowerPoppy, digi stamp, Tulips, Copic, handmade card

I printed the PowerPoppy Digi Tulips onto X-Press It blending card using my printer and then coloured them with Copics. I then diecut them with Spellbinders Nestabilities Majestic  Elements Resplendent Rectangles and inked around the edge with Distress Ink Worn Lipstick before removing from the die. The sentiment is also from the same set which I have cut out using Sizzix scalloped circles and inked around the edge with the same Distress Ink. The rest of my card is Bazzill textured cardstock and the ribbon from my stash.

Copic markers used: RV11,  RV14, RV17, RV19, G21, G24, G28, BG78, W5, YR04 and B41.

ODBDSLC204 - Shabby Chic Inspiration

This week's challenge at Our Daily Bread Designs, ODBDSLC204, is a picture inspiration challenge to create a Shabby Chic card. Shabby Chic is definitely not something I find easy to make and I can say I was definitely challenged when making this card!
This is what I came up with:

Elizabeth Whisson, Our Daily Bread Designs, ODBD, ODBDDT, ODBDSLC204, Psalm 40:2, shabby chic, Scripture Collection 12, Glory, ODBD Vintage Labels Dies, ODBD Vintage Flourish Pattern Dies, ODBD Ornate Hearts Dies, ODBD Fancy Foliage Dies

These are the pictures to be inspired by:

They both are lovely pictures however something about the bottom one caught my eye - I loved the brown and cream with touches of purple and my mind just thinks of hints of gold too. I featured a verse on my card this week - Psalm 40:2 from Our Daily Bread Designs' Scripture Collection 12. I have stamped in clear ink then heat embossed with gold EP. The verse is diecut with ODBD Vintage Labels. I then stamped some hints of the morning glory around the edge from the Our Daily Bread Designs Glory set (newly released this month) and coloured them with Copic markers.

For more inspiration for this challenge please visit my talented design team sisters:

I am currently studying the book of Psalms during a 6 week night course though Trinity Theological College with Jamie Houghton being the lecturer. It has only just started but I am so excited about it all already. We had a general introduction and overview of Psalms in week 1 and I wanted to share a little bit about what I learnt.

The book of Psalms, according to Martin Luther, is like a "...Little Bible, wherein everything contained in the entire Bible is beautifully and briefly comprehended, and compacted into an enchiridion or Manual"*. We should study the book of Psalms because it is God's word for us and it is about Jesus!
We are to read the book of Psalms as:
(a) a Christian book (because it is about Jesus and for those who trust in Him);
(b) as one book made up of a collection of 150 psalms;
(c) as a collection of 150 individual songs and prayers that are different yet similar;
(d) as individual poems; and
(e) as prayers from the heart.

To expand a bit more on points (b) - (e):
There are books within the book of Psalms! There is an introduction (Psalms 1 and 2), Books 1 through 5 (Psalms 3 - 41, 42-72, 73-80, 100-106 and 107-145) and then a conclusion (Psalms 146 - 150). It appears that the book of Psalms is an intentional collection of prayers with a clear purpose and unified message rather than a random collection of haphazard prayers that has just been thrown together.

The book of Psalms is made up of different kinds of Psalms arising from different kinds of prayer that fall within a pattern of: praising God for His works and character (hymns), requests for help (laments) and thanking God for His help (thanksgiving). (There are some other types which include Messianic/Kingship and Wisdom/Torah/law; and as you delve into each "type" they can be subdivided even further.) There is a pattern through the Psalms of life's ups and downs but it has a progress of "moving forward" which tends to reflect the walk of our Christian life.

It was interesting to hear in the lecture that each Psalm is made up of stanzas and lines in poetic form that is hard to see when translated into English (i.e. one verse in English is not always one "line" in Hebrew poetry). Hebrew poetry is generally succinct - as an example, 7 hebrew words being translated into approximately 19 English words, for one of the verses in Psalms. The core of Hebrew poetry is a two-part structure called parallelism (although sometimes there is only one part, or three or four :-) ). Parallelism is one thought expressed two ways but it can also work where the line might be ' "a", whats more "b" '. Hebrew poetry also uses metaphors and imagery to convey meaning. For example the word "shield" is used to convey the message of God being our refuge or protector in Psalm 3:3. Have a look at the verse I used on my card this week (Psalm 40:2) - what imagery can you see there?

Psalms are also prayers - even Jesus used them (see Psalm 22). Prayer means to request or to ask but more broadly prayer is about talking to God. Psalms give us the words that we need to address God when we want to praise and thank Him and even when we are feeling down/bad. God gives us these words so that we can be honest with Him about how we feel yet they keep us focused on what is truly important - Jesus.

I challenge you this week to pick up your Bible and read some Psalms. Our "homework" this week is to read Psalms 1 - 25 and to look for echoes or conceptual links in them. I am looking forward to delving deeper into this book of the Bible in the coming weeks and hope to share some of it each week with you.
Please note that not all of the words above are mine and some are taken from the lecture notes for the course.
*Martin Luther - from the preface to the Revised Edition of the German Psalter (1531)

Watercolour Pencil Class

Had a fabulous time on Saturday morning teaching and meeting some new ladies! We focused on watercolour pencils for this class and everyone had a go at colouring an image and then using it to make their cards. These were the two samples cards I made:

Elizabeth Whisson, Flourishes, Orchids, watercolour pencils, watercolor pencils, Rexel Derwent, handmade card
The image is from Flourishes Orchids. The orchids and leaves are dry watercolour pencils on dry watercolour paper then wet using a waterbrush. For the background I have scribbled some orange watercolour pencil onto a scrap piece of cardstock, wet the background of my image with water and picked up the colour from the cardstock and "painted" in the background close to the image. I then used a flat waterbrush to draw out the colour so that it fades to light orange.

Elizabeth Whisson, handdrawn image, daffodils, watercolour pencils, watercolor pencils, Rexel Derwent
This image, daffodils (in case you cannot tell) is drawn by myself in black Copic multiliners 0.1 and 0.3 mm. I then used dry watercolour pencils on dry watercolour paper for the daffodils and leaves and wet using a waterbrush. The background is similar to the card above - wet paper and picked up the colour from watercolour pencils scribbled on a scrap piece of cardstock (my "paint palette" I called it). I used 3 different colours for the background - they kind of "blend" together due to the paper being wet first.

As you can see I'm not big on the "washed out" watercolour look - but in the class I showed a range of different techniques to give everyone some ideas / options.

These are the cards the ladies made:

Image from Crafter's Companion - Strawberry Kisses - Little Miss
Gorgeous little cat and love the purple theme throughout this card :-)

Image from AnnaBelle Stamps - Lil Monster Gone Fishing
I think this one is absolutely gorgeous! She has done a great job and I love the water!

Image from Flourishes - Sunflowers
The colouring is beautiful and I love the blue washed background. Always love her additions of Stickles and pearls/rhinestones :-)

Image from AnnaBelle Stamps - A Beautiful Day
This is one of my favourite images from AnnaBelle Stamps and I love the colour combination this lady has chosen. Also love the stickles and glossy accents as raindrops!

Image from Flourishes - Berry Sweet
At first she said "there's no way I can colour an image with watercolour pencils" and look what she did! Fantastic job - absolutely love the colours on the berries and the leaves - gorgeous!

Well done ladies! Hope you all had a great time - I know I did!

ODBDSLC203 - Sketch

There is a Sketch challenge, ODBDSLC203, at Our Daily Bread Designs this week! Here is my card:

Elizabeth Whisson, Our Daily Bread Designs, ODBDDT, ODBD, Special Boy, monster truck, handmade card, ODBD Antique Labels and Border Dies, ODBD Rustic Beauty Paper Collection, happy birthday, boy card, male card, Copics

And this is the sketch:

It was my nephew's birthday last week (he turned 3!) and this is the card that I made for him. As you can see I've turned the sketch sideways and kind of flipped it so the bow is at the top. I umm'd and ahh'd about putting the "bow" on the card... but it's in the sketch (and I had already taken a few liberties with the layers!) - so I did add it in and while it makes it look a "little" girly...it's not too bad :-)

I have used Our Daily Bread Designs' Special Boy stamp set for this card with the gorgeous new paper pack from ODBD - Rustic Beauty Collection and added in my border from the ODBD Antique Labels and Border Dies. The monster truck stamp actually faces the other direction but I have mirror or reversed stamped it like I explain about the butterfly here in another post of mine.

Mother's Day Card Class

I had an awesome time with some lovely young ladies last Saturday afternoon teaching them a little bit about diecutting and then we made our own Mother's Day (or other occasion) card. The aim of the card class was to use diecuts so we used a diecut to make our own flowers and I was really impressed with how well everyone did with their first flowers!

This was the example card
I have used Spellbinders Bitty Blossoms for my flowers with Our Daily Bread Designs Fancy Foliage Dies.
The sentiment is from Stamp-It and I have diecut it with ODBD Elegant Ovals Dies.

And these are the cards that the ladies made:

Beautiful flowers and love the stickles and glossy accents :-)
Stamps: KaiserCraft sentiments Occasions
Dies: Spellbinders Bitty Blossoms and Spiral Blossom Three, Our Daily Bread Designs Fancy Foliage

I love this colour scheme  and the flowers are like buds just opening - beautiful!
Dies: Spellbinders Foliage Two and Bitty Blossoms

More awesome flowers and I so love how creative this girl is with the Stickles!
Stamp: KaiserCraft sentiments Occasions
Dies: Our Daily Bread Designs Fancy Foliage, Spellbinders Spiral Blossom One and Bitty Blossoms

Gorgeous flowers! This lady did a fantastic job adding pearls to the middle of hers.
Also love this colour scheme too!
Dies: Spellbinders Bitty Blossoms and Marianne Design Creatables Branch Forest

This one isn't quite finished (nothing is stuck down (or up on foam tape) yet) but my Mum did an awesome job using her (first??) stamp and diecut set! I'm pretty sure she has used Distress Markers to colour her images :-)
Stamps: Stamp-It sentiment and Hero Arts Garden Flowers stamp and diecut set
Dies: Hero Arts Garden Flowers stamp and diecut set
Aren't they all awesome??!

Materials List for my card:
Copics: None
Stamps: Stamp-It sentiment
Ink: Distress Ink Worn Lipstick, Memento Tuxedo Black
Cardstock and DP: Quill XL Multiboard, KaiserCraft Precious Moments, Grace Taylor Blossom

Be Joyful

I had fun making this card today with Our Daily Bread Designs stamps, dies and paper! I am so loving the new paper collection - Rustic Beauty - it is gorgeous! Here is my card:

Elizabeth Whisson, handmade card, Our Daily Bread Designs, ODBD, ODBDDT, To God be the glory, Be Joyful, Glory, ODBD Vintage Labels Dies, ODBD Vintage Flourish Pattern Dies, ODBD Fancy Foliage Dies, ODBD Rustic Beauty Paper Collection, copics

I have stamped the main flower image from the Our Daily Bread Designs Be Joyful set with Memento Tuxedo Black onto X-Press It blending card and coloured it with Copic markers. It is then diecut with the new ODBD Vintage Labels Dies and inked with Distress Ink Victorian Velvet. I have stamped the same image again onto another piece of blending card and coloured just three of the flowers with Copic markers then fussy cut them and popped them up on foam tape over the original image.

The sentiment is the from the Our Daily Bread Designs Glory set (new in the May release) and diecut with ODBD Vintage Flourish Pattern Dies. The leaves are from the ODBD Fancy Foliage Dies - for these I have used a piece from the Rustic Beauty Collection

The gorgeous background DP is also from the ODBD Rustic Beauty Paper Collection. I have used a white ribbon and coloured it with RV95 Copic marker to match the flowers and paper.

I also stamped the small image from the same ODBD Be Joyful set on the inside of my card.

Next week I will be starting a 6 week night course with Trinity Theological College on The Book of Psalms - Prayer, Praise and Jesus! This will be the 5th unit I've done with Trinity Theological College and I am really looking forward to delving into the Book of Psalms! For each unit you have a choice to write an assignment after the course has finished (there are usually a few different questions to choose from). I have completed the assignments for the other units and am looking forward to researching for this one too. You learn so much in the units but I find researching for and writing the assignments helps me to "dig a bit deeper" and "cement" what I learnt in the course into my brain! I look forward to being able to share some of what I learn in the course with you all :-)
To God be the Glory!

Bookmarks

I made these bookmarks a few weeks ago but haven't had a spare moment to add them to my blog until now!

Materials
Top row:
All three stamped images are from Flourishes - Gerber Daisies, Sunflowers and Winter Blossoms. Stamped on X-Press It blending card and coloured with Copic markers. The first and second bookmarks are diecut with Spellbinders Nestabilities Long Classic Scalloped Rectangles Large and the third one is diecut from Spellbinders Shapeabilities Tags and Flags. I'm not entirely sure...but I think the Distress Inks I have used are Stormy Sky, Tumbled Glass and Shaded Lilac.

Middle row:
All stamped images are from PowerPoppy by Marcella Hawley - Springtime Love and Azalea. They are stamped on X-Press It blending card and coloured with Copic markers. The first and second bookmarks are diecut with Our Daily Bread Designs custom bookmark dies and the third one is diecut from Spellbinders Nestabilities Long Classic Scalloped Rectangles Large. The first and third one have Distress Ink Shaded Lilac inked around the edges.

Last row:
All stamped images are from Our Daily Bread Designs - The Light of Life, Bookmarks Trees and Bookmark Verses. They are stamped on X-Press It blending card and the first two are coloured with Copic markers. The second and third bookmarks are diecut with Our Daily Bread Designs Bookmark Dies and the first one is diecut with Spellbinders Shapeabilities Tags and Flags. I have used Distress Ink Spiced Marmalade and Shaded Lilac to ink around the edges of the second and third one.

Each bookmark is backed with a piece of white paper (diecut to the same shape as the bookmark) so that you cannot see the Copics that have bled through the X-Press It blending card.

I am sure I did write down which Copic markers I used on each one... when I find exactly where I wrote it I will update this post.

Thanks for looking!

ODBDSLC202 F-L-O-W-E-R

The challenge this week at Our Daily Bread Designs is a recipe challenge! ODBDSLC202 is to use four letters from the word F-L-O-W-E-R to create your card. Eg. Feathers, Oval, Embossing and Red.

For my card I have used F-Flowers, L-Layers, E-Embellishments (pearls) and R-Ribbon.

Elizabeth Whisson, Our Daily Bread Designs, Gloy, ODBD Blooming Garden Paper Collection, ODBD Christian Faith Paper Collection, morning glory, Lamentations 3:23,

I have stamped the Morning Glory (from Our Daily Bread Designs Glory - new release in May!) with black ink onto X-Press It blending card and coloured with Copics. I diecut the shape and then added the verse (from the same set - Glory). I've then diecut the same square shape from ODBD Blooming Garden Paper Collection to use as a border for my flowers and backed both of these onto purple cardstock. The other DP layers are from ODBD Blooming Garden Paper Collection and ODBD Christian Faith Paper Collection (both backed with cardstock). I've then added embellishments (pearls) and ribbon on the left side.

I've also used some AtYou Spica glitter pens to add some sparkle to the morning glory, leaves and verse.

I am entering this card in the Word Art Wednesday #131 Anything Goes challenge.

ODBDSLC201 - Wing it

It's time for another Our Daily Bread Designs challenge. This week the challenge, ODBDSLC201, theme is "Wing it" - use wings somewhere on your creation. I have created a few different projects for this weeks challenge and I've gone more with a CAS "look".

I have included butterfly wings on my cards and bird wings on my bookmarks.

Elizabeth Whisson, Our Daily Bread Designs, butterfly, Psalm 36:5, handmade card, Grunge Butterfly, 2 step butterfly, distress markers

I have coloured the Our Daily Bread Designs Grunge Butterfly Single (this stamp is also available in the God's Love set) with Distress Markers, spritzed with a little water and then stamped it onto white card. I've then done the same for both stamps from the ODBD 2 Step Butterfly but stamped them onto a separate piece of white card and diecut them with the ODBD Grunge Butterfly Die. I've popped these both up on foam tape over the grunge butterfly. The sentiment is from the Faith stamp set.

Both 2 Step butterflies die cut and popped up on foam tape over the grunge butterfly.
I was stoked to find that I had this verse (one I used on my card) in my collection of Our Daily Bread Design stamps. My husband came back from church last Sunday (I didn't go as I've been sick) and tried to tell me about this song that they sang...but at the time he couldn't remember the words or how it went! Then a few days later he woke up with a start and said "I remember!" and proceeded to sing to me the song that he wanted to tell me about. I then looked it up - the song is Your Love Oh Lord (Psalm 36) by Third Day (you can listen to it here) and I thought the lyrics really fit in with this week's theme of wings.

This is the passage from the Bible that their lyrics essentially come from:

"Your lovingkindness, O LORD,
extends to the heavens,
Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
Your judgements are like a great deep.
O LORD, You preserve man and beast.
How precious is Your lovingkindness,
O God!
And the children of men take refuge
in the shadow of Your wings."
 Psalm 36:5-7

As you can see I've used Pslam 36:5 on my card and the end of verse 7 talks about taking refuge in the shadow (or shelter) of the God's wings. What an amazing picture! I think of a mother bird cuddling her little baby to keep it safe under her wing - and that's what God does for us. We can take comfort in the fact that He is almighty and all powerful and protects us always!

And here are some more projects:

For this card I have stamped the bible verse (from the ODBD Glory stamp set - only just released May 2014!) onto a white card. I then die cut a piece of X-Press It Mask-It with ODBD Vintage Labels Dies (also just released in May 2014). I placed the diecut Mask-It over the verse. I then stamped the ODBD Butterfly Single, using several different colours of distress ink, over the card. Removed the Mask-It and then used the same die from the ODBD Vintage Labels Dies to dry emboss around the verse. I then temporarily stuck the die down to the card and used it as a stencil to add a little Distress Ink for a frame.
